One of the biggest complaints I hear from people about dry herb vaporizing is that it tastes awful. On the contrary, you get the best flavour from dry herb vaporizing, this article will explain how to really enjoy those terpenes from vaporizing cannabis.
It’s all about those terpenes!
Terpenes are the essential oils of the plant, they give each cultivar its unique flavour and smell. Some cannabis cultivars can have incredible flavour, especially an aromatic sativa leaning cultivar like Blue Dream. With the right vaporizer you get all the wonderful notes of blueberry, lavender and citrus from a good Blue Dream.
It’s what makes dry herb vaporizing so great, the incredible flavour you get when it’s done right. Smoking cannabis destroys the terpenes so you don’t get the delicate flavour that you do when vaporizing cannabis.
With vaporizing you never reach combustion so you never inhale smoke, instead you inhale a vapor that contains the cannabinoids and other plant properties. Terpenes give you a rich flavour experience and here’s how to get the most of their flavour…

You need a good dry herb vaporizer
This is the most important tip I can give you, it really matters what vaporizer you buy. Some have poor design and will taste bad and burn your throat. Even some of the high end models can lack flavour because of how they’re made.
When you buy a dry herb vaporizer look for one that has a long vapor path, or a cooling unit like the Crafty + and other Storz and Beckel’s models which all have superior flavour.
If you’re a terpene connessiour and you’re looking for the best flavour from a dry herb vaporizer there’s 2 that I recommend that are the best I’ve tried for truly outstanding flavour and they are:
Arizer Air 2 with a long stem
Hands down the Arizer Air 2 with the curved stem attachment gives you the best flavour. You can also use the long glass stem for the Solo 2, the glass stems for Arizers are interchangeable.
We’ve found that the flavour from the Arizer Air 2 with a longer stem has consistently given us the best flavour and it’s lower priced than other vaporizers on the market. It has removeable batteries so you never have to worry about the battery failing on you.
Crafty + by Storz and Bickel
I haven’t tried the Mighty by Storz and Bickel but from what I’ve heard it’s just as good, if not better than the Crafty + but it comes with a much higher price tag. The Crafty + is also a high end vaporizer that boasts superior flavour and a smooth draw.
Storz and Bickel products are pretty much the gold standard with dry herb vaporizers but they are expensive. The downside is they don’t have a removeable battery so if the battery fails out of it’s warranty, you’ll lose your vaporizer. So far our Crafty + has been good and we’ve had it for 2 years now.
Cool vapor gives better flavour
Cool vapor is the key to good flavour. With any dry herb vaporizer the temperature for taste is 356f or 180c. This temperature will give you maximum flavour.
I recommend you start at that temperature so you can get a few draws with the rich flavour of the terpenes and then turn up the temperature if you’re wanting to release more cannabis properties, that way you get the best vaporizing experience.
Use a bubbler
Most dry herb vaporizers can be modified to attach a bubbler. First you get the right adapter piece and then the bubbler sits on top. (watch the video above as I demonstrate a bubbler for the Arizer).
Bubblers cool the vapor and give you a much smoother draw. Bubblers also give you great flavour however you may have to turn up the temperature with a bubbler, depending on its size. Play around with different temperature settings to see which one give you rich vapor with good flavour.
Even a crappy vaporizer can be turned into a good one with a bubbler. Look up options for the model you have so you can get improve flavour for your vaporizer.
Clean your vaporizer regularly
A dirty, gunky vaporizer will taste like shit. Vaporizers need to be cleaned once every couple of weeks but once a week is ideal.
You can use 90% + isopropyl to clean most vaporizer parts, just make sure your not getting any liquid inside the oven or other mechanics of the vaporizer. One trick is to use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol (that’s had the excess squeezed out), tilt your vaporizer upside down and clean the inside of the oven while it’s inverted, this will keep liquid from seeping inside the unit.
Glass parts are easily cleaned with isopropyl, just let them soak in it for a few minutes and use hot water and paper towel to dry it off after.
Every unit will have their own way to clean them properly, check the manual so you know what parts need to be cleaned. (I have a demo of the Davinci iQ2 in the above video).
Eat something minty!
This is my bonus tip for getting the best flavour from your dry herb vaporizer and that’s mint! This is something I discovered years ago and it’s amazing the flavour you can get from eating something minty.
Either suck on a mint, brush your teeth or use a minty mouthwash before you vaporize and you’ll be surprised how it brings out the flavour of the terpenes!
You don’t want to eat something too minty as you don’t want it to overpower the flavour, you want enough so that it enhances the terpenes. It can make some cultivars taste like candy.
Give it a try and then leave a comment below and tell me what you thought about using mint first.
Dry herb vaporing is for the terpene connoisseur
Dry herb vaporizing is the best way to enjoy all of the delicate notes of each terpene present in a cultivar. However you need to have a good vaporizer with a long vapor path, cool vapor by lowering the temperature, using a bubbler and keeping your unit clean.
Eating a mint first will also enhance the flavour.
Preserving the terpenes with dry herb vaporizing not only give you superior flavour it gives you a customized experience as you can release the cannabinoids and terpenes you want by changing the temperature. Check out Weed Mama’s temperature guide to learn more.

Can tou help
Check out my reviews for Vaporizers to help you make a decision. I don’t have any recommendations for a unit under $100, most are over that. It’s expensive but there are decent models under $200 that you can try.
I’m getting ready to purchase the Davinci IQ2 and would like to know which bubbler or stem I should get
