It’s the time of year when we can finally grow outside (yippee!) and you’ll need all the help you can get. Cannabis plant are finicky and require a lot of care. I’ve been growing cannabis (unsuccessfully) outdoors for 2 seasons and both times I learned a lot out growing marijuana plants outdoors.

I learned that you have to start the seeds early, they need a lot of light. They need proper nutrients and you have to constantly monitor them for pests and bud rot (the reason why my plants failed last year). Starting your seeds earlier in the year and then transferring them outside when the season is warm enough, is the best way to ensure you get your harvest before night time temperatures dip too low.

Canadian laws for growing cannabis plants

You can legally grow up to 3 plants at your home. However the plants must be hidden from view of the public. So you can’t have your cannabis plant in your front window, also if you’re growing in your yard, make sure they aren’t visible from the street or your back alley.

Ok now that you’re ready to get growing, here’s 3 books that will help you have a successful harvest.

The feminist weed farmer book

1. Feminist Weed Farmer: Growing Mindful Medicine in Your Own Backyard

I love this little book, it’s simple and gives you the basics of growing cannabis outdoors. She offers great tips such as labelling all of your plants (something I forgot to do last year!) and proper care of the plants. I highly recommend this cute little book for anyone growing plants outdoors this year.

Cannabis Grow Bible book

2. Cannabis Grow Bible

This is the definitive guide for anyone looking to grow cannabis either indoors or outdoors. It’s a big book with a lot of information, great for those of you who are serious about growing however it may be a lot of information for those of you who are just wanting to try it. This book goes over everything and is what all cannabis growers have on their shelves.

What’s Wrong with my Marijuana Plant book

2. What’s Wrong with my Marijuana Plant?

This book gives you solutions to all kinds of problems that can arise when growing cannabis. From pests to yellow leaves, you can find your problem with suggestions on how to fix it. Cannabis leaves talk to you, from what I’ve learned over the past couple of years growing is learning the language of the leaves will help you have the best harvest.

Growing cannabis is a labor of love

The books mentioned above are a great way to help you grow healthy and happy cannabis plants. It takes practice to get good at growing cannabis so don’t feel bad if you’ve had a few unsuccessful goes at it (like me). Every time you try, you’ll learn a little more about the plant until you’re growing like a pro and saving money. Growing your own means you can make your own edibles and topicals.

I have neighbours that grow in a greenhouse in their backyard, that’s a great way to grow if you can afford the space. This allows you to hide the plants and keep them lock up from thieves. It also creates the perfect atmosphere for your pants so you don’t have to worry about the temperature dropping before they reach harvest.
